Rewards file, 1874-1878.

The governor, upon request by the general public or public officials, could offer monetary rewards for the capture of fugitives from justice. This series consists of newspaper clippings, two broadsides (wanted posters), letters to Governor Houston, petitions, affidavits, and indictments. The first newspaper clipping, in a Eufaula, Ala. editorial, discusses the murder of Willie Keils, who was murdered after an election in Spring Hill, Ala. The second article describes a murder at Munford, and how the man was "shot at the supper table." Both articles have letters attached to them requesting rewards to be issued by Governor Houston. The first wanted poster, from Tuscumbia in Colbert Co., Ala., offers a $700 reward for the capture of the rapist Jim Boddie. A letter to the governor is also included. The second poster, referred to as a handbill in the accompanying letter, calls for the arrest of the murderer J.M. McCain, and promises a reward. Several letters to the governor describe the murder. The rest of this series consists of letters, petitions, affidavits, and copies of indictments sent to Gov. Houston. The letters are either requests to establish rewards or requests to pay awards for fugitives that had been captured. The petitions are also requests to establish rewards. The sixteen names listed below are fugitives discussed in this series.
